Concerns over climate change and pollution created by coal, along with high oil prices have created a demand for nuclear energy.
Though nuclear power is seen by many as the environmentally friendly energy source of the future, industry officials still face opposition from some environmental groups and other sceptics.
Resurgent global interest in nuclear power has made Zambia, a southern African nation better known for its vast copper reserves, into a hotbed of uranium exploration.
Experts say while radon gas emitted by uranium presents some radiation risks, modern technology makes them negligible to workers and the public.
Many scientists including the U.S. are planning to build new nuclear reactors and China is looking to imported uranium for the many nuclear reactors it will use to help fuel its massive economic growth.

Ringing out the old, clocking in the new.
The year 2007 was a momentous year. Many Indians came into the limelight. Pankaj Advani scored a first on the billiards table. Vishwanathan Anand brought glory to chess. Dhoni was appointed Indian of the year through his meritorious achievement with the ball, namely in the Twenty 20 cricket series.
Sania Mirza rocketed up the ratings ladder in tennis. Sourav Ganguly made a dramatic comeback in cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, setting aside criticism revealed the old magic still remained with his command over the bat. And, India saw a new leader emerge in Anil Kumble, under whose leadership, the cricket team scored a victory over Pakistan in Indo- Pak cricket series.
The year ended with the shocking news of the assassination of India's neighbour Pakistan's only woman political leader, Benazir Bhutto. This has implications world-wide for democracy with the repercussions yet to follow.

A troubled sub-continent
In our country, we may despair and throw up our hands. What is to become of our
country? Long queues, insufficient water supply, bad roads, classes not starting
on time, a poor show on the international front........ But compare this situation
to our neighbours. We are better off. Democracy collapses in Pakistan. Military rule
is declared. One of its' prominent woman leader is shot dead.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda hold sway. Poverty is widespread. There is a
general lack of civilised life.
Bangladesh has the dubious distinction of being the poorest nation in the world.
Also, Pakistan at present is the cradle of terrorism, with hot-beds of terrorism
springing up in every town and city.
We third-world countries are a pawn in the military game the rich and powerful
Western nations play. America's warships ply on South-Asian sea-lanes. We
cannot dictate to the world. We can only come to terms with it.

World's fastest train -courtesy Japan
Japan has another plus to its' credit. It plans to introduce the world's fastest train
by the 2025 financial year, a next-generation maglev built at a cost of 45 billion dollars.
'Maglev' or magnetically levitated trains travel above ground through an electromagnetic pull.
The only maglev train now in commercial operation is in Shanghai. Central Japan Railway Co(JR Central) plans to build a maglev linear- motor train between Tokyo and a to-be-determined area in central Japan at a cost of 5.1 trillion yen.
A reliable source quotes'It will be the fastest train ever-if it beats the one in Shanghai-
with a velocity of about 500 kilometres per hour, travelling a distance of 290 kilometres'. JR Central's magnetic-levitated train hit 581kph in 2003 in a trial run on a test course.
The company projects the train will bring in five per cent additional revenue in the first year.

Australia: a tough nut to crack
The Indian cricket team has left the shores of the country for Australia with a lot of optimism. In Kookaburra land, they expect to put up a good show against the world's no.1 side
in cricket i.e. the Australian side.
Generally the scenario is this:India amass a grand total in 1st innings. And then, a slide-down. A total batting collapse in 2nd innings.
When all looks bright for the Indian team, they fail to make good on the lucky start they have made.
In the Indo-Pak series, however they managed to clinch a victory.
Anil Kumble has trumpeted his horn many times. And his deeds matches his words. But the Australian team too has its stalwarts. So the match looks evenly poised now.

Yakshagana feast
Yakshagana, the popular art form of South Kanara draws large crowds in Mangalore. So it was on a balmy weekday evening when the dance held thrall over Mangloreans.
As the dance progressed, it became apparent that the art form bears resemblance to Kathakali in costume and dramatic gestures. Bharatnatyam steps are also included in the repertoire.
Havyasi Balaga, Kadri staged 'Guru Dakshine' episode (tenku thittu style) and Laxmi Janardhana Yaksha kala Mandali, Arbalpadi, Udupi performed 'Kaviratna Kalidasa episode ( badaga thittu style).
It was purported to be a 'Clean Yakshagana' festival.
Narada made his appearance and the colorful costumes of the actors and actresses made for pictorial appeal.

India's fortunes in international cricket
In the wake of India's win over Pakistan in cricket and on the eve of the India-Australia series, heated debates take place over each side's advantages.
There is a no-hold's barred exchange, Indian cricketing great's extoll their players' positive sides and express optimism in holding their own against the best team in the world-Australian cricket team.
In their turn, the Australians are quick on the rebuff deriding the Indians for holding onto ageing cricket super-heroes like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
They are confident of mauling the Indian side and reducing them to bits while also pouring fulsome praise on individual Indian players' achievements.
One will have to wait and see. It's going to be an interesting series, with both sides gloved up to the attack. Anil Kumble has time and again expressed confidence in his side while not underestimating the Australian team. Come Boxing Day and the consecutive days' to follow we will know the outcome.

Bowing before the Lord
The 'Rome of the East' is renowned not only for beautiful churches. The pious can find solace in temples as well.
At Kateel, the temple going by its' name, the Kateel Durga Parameshwari temple is situated in the middle of the river Nandini. The Goddess Shri Durga Parameshware is worshipped here as Shakthi in linga form.
Punctually at four o'clock every morning, the sanctum is cleaned up and the morning Abhishekha is solemnised. At six the sanctum is opened for the devotees for darshan. At half-past six the morning worship takes place. Only at that time the Udhbava linga and Moolabimba are accessible to the devotees for darshan. At half-past ten the mid-day Abhishekha takes place. That is followed by the ritual decoration of the idol consummating in the Mahapooja at half-past twelve.
At ten the shrine is closed for the day. Thus the temple is kept open for devotees from six in the morning to ten at night. After both the ( mid-day and nightly) Mahapoojas meal is served. On special occasions like the festivals, the autumnal Navarathri and on days of avowed services by devotees the Temple is kept open till about midnight.
The temple is efficiently playing the role of a propogator of Indian culture.

Umbrage over Sonia's electioneering remarks
Politicians go overboard when they are campaigning. Take Indira Gandhi's 'Garibi Hatao' slogan or the recent BJP's 'India Shining' manifesto which go so well with the majority. Sonia Gandhi's recent outburst of 'Merchants of death' or 'Maut ka saudagar' has drawn a lot of flak.
In a bid to win votes, each party tries to outdo each other in way of 'hitting out' at each other.
One and all strive to unearth constructive points and destructive about the other. They go gung-ho in bringing skeletons out of the cupboard which are many amongst politicians. It may be bribery, servility or money-laundering.
The Election Commission, on this occasion has reminded Sonia Gandhi and Narendra Modi to be reticent. The politicians concerned would do well to heed the admonishment.

Film Review
A hugely enjoyable film, one would say. This is how one describes 'Aaja Nachle'.
Madhuri Dixit's comeback film. One is prone to discard it as another masala entertainer.
But the movie makes a point. It is a woman-oriented movie. What it is to be a woman and how she strives to achieve her goal, a woman of substance- this is the point the movie makes.
A male-dominated society. The enemies she makes, her successes and failures, the heart-breaks she goes through are all depicted in the movie.
Not the usual boy- girl romance. A woman gallant enough to stand for her principles and rebel against society- this is the character that Madhuri Dixit portrays.
Her actions puts her fellow sisters to shame. Those who follow the conventional path of marriage and children.
The film seeks to make a point. And, it is in keeping with the trend of the times.

Temple town
On the Tamil Nadu coast, is a marvellous town of temples carved out of rock. Mammalapuram or Mahabalipuram, was one of the greatest sea ports of ancient times.
One of the most magnificent depictions of Mamallapuram is that of Mahishasuramardini made in a 7th century cave.
There are nine monolithic free- standing temples cut out of boulders. These are the earliest such edifices in India to be carved out of rocks, both on the outside and the inside. They are called rathas or temple chariots.
Perhaps, the most memorable aspect of the art of Mamallapuram is the depiction of the many beings that inhabit the world: deer, cows, elephants and others.
What gives the art of ancient India a special place is its vision of the world: a vision that sees the same in each of us men and women and in animals, plants and trees and even the breeze that moves the leaves. It sees a unity in the whole of creation , which imparts a great harmony and compassion to this vision.

Intolerance in Indian society
It is common for expression of righteous hatred towards an individual espousing a certain cause making news in our country. When Sonia Gandhi decided to contest for election the entire Opposition raised mayhem. She is after all, a foreigner. Such was the furore that she ultimately nominated a figurehead in her place.
Sania Mirza invited the wrath of fundamentalists who protested the attire she wore for play.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is derided by the Opposition for being the 'weakest' Prime Minister and a 'shadow' Prime Minister.
Sourav Ganguly was the butt of Greg Chappell 's ridicule. But he proved his detractors wrong.
Now it is Taslima Nasreen's turn. She has bowed to her critics by deleting the offensive pages in her book. When will we learn tolerance?

Punching another galaxy
The black hole of a 'death star' is seen shooting the jet of radiation into the adjacent galaxy, which glows as it deflects much of the energy, according to NASA.
The violence erupted in the galactic system called 3C321, which involves two galaxies orbiting around each other in relatively close proximity only 20 thousand light years, and 1.4 billion light-years from the earth.
The black hole in the larger galaxy was viewed blasting out the jet of radiation and particles, especially high-energy x-rays and gamma-rays as the smaller one moved right into the jet's path.
The massive influx of energy and radiation from the jet could induce the formation if large numbers of stars and planets after its initial wake of destruction is complete.
Talk of 'cosmic' wonders.

Whaling for meat
The decision of Japanese whalers to slaughter over a thousand whales in the Antartic in their latest season demonstrates deplorable contempt for the 1986 moratorium on commercial whaling issued by the International Whaling Commission. This is not the first time Japan has brazenly launched its whaling campaign. This is ostensibly for 'research' but occasionally, it has also cited 'sovereign right' and 'cultural traditions'. The whalers have outraged an already dismayed international community by adding to their list 50 endangered humpbacks, which are covered by a moratorium that dates back to 1963. An equal number of fin whales are to be killed besides the familiar quarry- the minke. The beneficiary of the Japanese expeditions is the meat industry not science.
The protection of sea creatures, especially whales and dolphins, must be put on a stronger footing, they need desperately to be saved from ship strikes, pollution, hunting and pressure from oil exploration activity.
Whales are intelligent, gentle and valuable members of global bio-diversity. They need every possible protection from humankind.

Fog befuddles air passengers
Ever since the thick winter fog formed over the city a couple of weeks ago, every day the HAL airport has been witnessing around four or five flight delays.
Due to the fog delays the process of going through all the formalities takes about 45 minutes to one hour, whilst previously it used to take 20 minutes.
AAI officials said that most of the fog delays were for 15-20 minutes and this was making flight schedules go haywire.
On numerous occasions flights have been diverted to Chennai which is th e nearest airport.
The HAL airport with over 305 takeoff and landings ha s witnessed a steady increase in air traffic since last year when inbound and outbound flights numbered 275 flights.
The weather promises to be the controlling factor in predicting fllight timings.

Indians world-wide
We Indians have a poor opinion of ourselves. So, whenever we do well in any field, it generates interest.
Be it the sports arena, the corporate world or banking sector.
Some individuals have made India proud. A few names can be cited such as Mukesh Ambani, the industrialist, L.N. Mittal the steel tycoon, Vijay Amritraj the tennis star and in recent times Sania Mirza and Kalpana Chawla the astronaut.
Indianss may face discrimination abroad and be the target of rascism but that doesn't prevent them from plodding on.
In recent times beauties like Aishwarya Rai, Sushmitha Sen, Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra have bought international acclaim to the country. Whilst previously they had an inferiority complex, they now walk the ramp with ease.
With nearly half the population under the poverty line, the rest half have under the influence of globalization entered the modern era.

Film Review
It's all in the news. Om Shanthi Om sends the cash registers in the box-office ringing. One wonders what all the fuss is all about. A dekko fills us with joy.
.......A glimpse into the flam-glam film world. A callow youth's foray into the tinsel world and his adventures. His ache for superstar Shanthi and twists and turns their romance takes is eschewed in the film.
Newcomer Deepika Padukone plays the role of Shanthi in his role as Om. A star's life, their ups and downs are depicted well in the film. The sordidness behind the glamor, the dangers lurking in the course of the stunt scenes are well brought out. A galaxy of stars grace the film. An ageing Dharmendra and Jeetendra, Shahrukh's best chum Kajol frolics with him, Shabana Azmi mouths her favorite view on slum demolition, Rani Mukherjee and Priyanka Chopra dazzle th e screen.
The end maybe unbelievable but it makes one happy.

The end maybe unbelievable but it makes one happy.

The arrogance of some politicians
In our country, charisma rules. The Gandhi family consider it their birthright to rule this country. This attitude percolates to their roadshows.
Rahul Gandhi has taken on the mantle of leadership in the Congress Party....... Sonia Gandhi, a housewife with no qualification whatsoever to join politics has been catapulted to the top position in this country.
But not even the 'supreme' can get away with murder as can be evinced by the notice issued recently to Sonia Gandhi. Holding her ' merchants of fear and death' remarks about Gujarat government prima facie violative of the model code of conduct, the Election Commission issued notice to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
This is a good sign. Democracy is alive in this country.

Aircraft maker's defence deal
Aircraft giant Lockheed Martin has already entered into its first deal with Indian Air Force - to supply the latest version of C130-J Hercules cargo aircraft.
Alongside this eventuality, they are also looking forward to joint research in specific areas with DRDO.
India has sent a Request for Proposal to Lockheed Martin- along with the makers of the US F-18 Super Hornet, Swedish Gripen, French Rafale, Russian MiG_35 126 multi-role fighter aircraft. IAF will buy sixC-130J 'tactical' aircraft with options to procure six more.
The company is also considering an RFP for supply of 19 low-level transportable valors from the IAF. The company is holding talks with IAF to assist in setting up an advanced data link testing laboratory in India.
India's arms arsenal looks fit to increase its' strength.

Sports in the competitive era
Sports in the modern day is no longer a game. Gone are the days when people used to relax and play tennis or cricket merely for fun.
Sports has acquired a mercurial quality about it. If a nation loses, the press lambasts the team and they are more or less relegated to the dustbin. They are termed is not nothing else, useless.
Lakhs and crores of money are pumped into the game and leading sportspersons of all countries now are rich people. If they win the crowd drools over them as well as the sporting authorities and they have now become pawns to the machine age when wins and losses can be predicted.
Nothing can escape the clawing grip of mechanisation, not even sports.
With sports apparel and other accessories like racquets, ball, bat and caps becoming major selling products and sports personalities no less than television stars as they endorse well-known brands sports as a major commercial entity is here to stay.

A method to evolution of science
Nobel laureate Sheldon Lee Glashow, speaking on 'Blind chance or intelligent design: The need for basic research' observed that some scientific discoveries, such as x-ray and penicillin , were unexpected.
But the discovery of streptomycin and the advances in the nuclear field resulted from targeted and premeditated research and come about through careful design in what he described as 'Kantian mode'.
He spoke of the important scientific discoveries in recent centuries and revealed the importance of both Kantian and serependitous procedures.
He stressed that importance of these two procedures must be kept in mind not only by aspiring agencies that seek to foster scientific progress.
Dr. Glashow was all the praise for the two great Indian physicists and Nobel Laureates Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and C.V.Raman.
Concluding from what he described as disjointed incidents of travel through the history of science, he observed that modern scientists rarely consulted classical philosophers.
'Progress in science cannot always be directed, a fact that funding agencies do not always take into account ' he said. Furthermore, he underscored the need for greater support and encouragement to research in basic science.

Covert nuclear strikes
A just-released book,'Deception' by two journalists , Adrian Levy and Catherine Scott-Clark has revealed some startling facts about Indo-Pak nuclear dealings.
The book says Indira Gandhi was in favour of attacking Kahuta and directed Air Marsal Dilbagh Singh, chief of air staff to handle the tough operation.
He ordered Indian Air Force Jaguar squadrons to practice low-level flying, simulating runs with 2000-pound bombs, according to the book.
In February1983, Pakistan had threatened to attack India's top nuclear weapon laboratory, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Trombay and cause maximum devastation to Mumbai, if India were to strike at a Pakstani nuclear weapon establishment at Kahuta near Islamabad.
Secrecy may cloud India's nuclear establishment but facts do leak out.

Bollywood and its' heroines
It is often complained that Bollywood does not treat the fairer sex well. They play merely a decorative role and are second-fiddle to the heroes.
A Meena Kumari or a Madhuri Dixit may have achieved fame and fortune but if you consider their remuneration figures, it hardly matches that of the heroes.
The hefty paycheques are reserved for the men while the leading ladies are still very distant poor cousins.
Bollywood's heroes get paid an amount that's virtually ten times a heroines. So, if a Kareena Kapoor aims for Rs. 5.5 crore for her next three films, Akshay Kumar has already gone past a whopping Rs. 17 crore a film.
Madhuri's cheque for the film 'Aaja Nachle' is nothing to crow about.
Contrast this with the business realities of Hollywood, where Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts command almost as much as their male counterparts. If a Tom Cruise gets #45 million for a film, Kidman is not far behind at # 35 million. If Brad Pitt gets #29 million, Angelina Jolie earns # 27 million.
Bollywood continues to be a poor cousin to its counterpart in the U.S.

Zooming in on the sun
In an attempt to get students interested in solar phenomena, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics will be distributing scientific kits for students.
Two types of kits will together include four instruments : a radio kit, two optical kits and a pocket spectroscope, to mark International Helophysical Year.
The kits will include a coelostat solar telescope, along with CCD cameras and computer. This is for university students.
The kits for school children will include a 35 mmAchromat Solar Imager Telescope to project the solar image on to a screen to safely view the sun and study sun spots.
What we would like to see is '24-hour astronomy ' where someone, around the globe is keeping watch on the sky.
After all interest in solar phenomena is so central to our lives.

NAPS achieves criticality
Sustained nuclear fission chain reaction resumed in the reactor core of Unit 1 of the Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS). The unit was shut down nearly two years ago for safety upgrade and replacement of major components.
The nuclear power plant of 220 MWe was recommissioned after en-ass coolant channel replacement (EMCCR) enhancing the service life of the unit by another 30 years.
The NAPS has two units of 220MWe each. These are the first units of the standardised Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor, the mainstay of the country's nuclear power programme.

'Lightning on Venus'
The Venusian atmosphere generates its own lightning. This was confirmed by astronomers working at the European Space Agency's Venus Express Mission.
The discovery puts Venus in elite planetary company. Scientists currently know of only three other planetary bodies in the entire universe that generate lightning- Earth, Jupiter and Saturn.
Lightning on Venus as well as on any other planet is an important discovery because the electrical discharges drive the chemistry of an atmosphere by breaking molecules into fragments in unexpected ways. Any future missions to Venus may have to take into account the electrical activity in its atmosphere.
The lightning on Venus is different from that found on Earth, Jupiter and Saturn, since it is the only lightning known that is not associated with water clouds.
Instead on Venus, the lightning is associated with clouds of sulphuric acid. The measurements of the electrical discharge were made with data obtained by the Venus Express magnetometer.

A unique festival
In India, festivals are many. Close on the heels of Deepavali, the city of Belgaum is now celebrating what could be described as 'Festival of Forts' to commemorate the victory of the great Maratha warrior Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj.
The best forts he built were the Sindhudurg and Pratapgad in Maharashtra.
The month-long festival of Shivaji's forts is an annual feature here and starts on Deepavali. What adds to the grandeur and celebration is that these mini forts are built not by civil engineers or architects but by the untrained, many of whom are children. All of them are school students from 1st to 6th standard. More than 8,000 people have already visited and expressed their admiration for the beautiful handiwork of the young masters.

A glimpse into Nature's bounty
Mount Abu is Amaravathi. Cool air, winding tar road, plenty of mango, bamboo and palm trees, small streams of water here and there.
Nature seemed to be undisturbed and unspoilt here. Reason- the place is sparsely populated even now. The scenic landscape include gigantic blocks of rocks in weird shapes, an array of coniferous trees, flowering shrubs, lovely lakes and the cool climes boasts a brochure.
Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan, the highest peak of Aravallis Gurushikhar is here.
A boom of hotels, shops and fun-lovers can cause damage - although gradually.

An astounding memory
Four-and -a -half year old M. Rahul Manjunath has a gift: he recalls and reels out verbatim an entire textbook leaving his parents and teachers speechless.
He has a fascination for colors and photographs, identifies maps complete with designs and motifs, if any, of more than 120 countries.
He names the capital cities of these countries and what is more, will even help you by giving the names of their currencies.
Interestingly, Rahul, who is also interested in astronomy, not only gives you a list of the planets but also the major star constellations and different galaxies.
He also reels out the names of Prime Ministers in a sequence, the Chief Ministers of the state and the Maharajas of Mysore and identifies them from their portraits.
An appetite for knowledge and a remarkable thirst for conquering new frontiers is what sums up this kid.
