India joins select club
After 25 years of diligent research in the face of a global technology denial regime, India's first nuclear powered submarine, INS Arihant which can remain under water for a whole month, was launched on Sunday. The country has now beenn catapulted into a select band of nations with such strategic technology.
The leviathan has a displacement of 6,000tonnes and houses a 80mwe pressurised water reactor as its main power source. Miniaturising the nuclear reactor to fit into a submarine was one of the most critical challenges.
Commended by Captain Angshuman Dutta, the 93 crew on board the deep sea monster can fire strategic missiles, anti-ship and landattack missiles and torpedoes. Though the exact depth of INS Arihant remains classified nuclear submarines can go upto a depth of 400-500metres.

Megh Sandhya
Thinking of snuggling up to bed with a warm blanket and a dish of pakodas in one hand to beat the chill. Forget the idea. Musical concerts are here to while away time in the monsoons.
The first of the (Monsoon special concert) Megh Sandhya was held at Town Hall,Mangalore on Sunday 26th July 2009.
Music of monsoon set the tone with lilting music flowing out of the strings of the sitar with Pandit Rafiq Khan at the helm. The ghatam produced resonating sounds, to the rhythm and beat of the tabla and mridangam. The morsing was no less an ally.
Distinguished artists graced the occasion. Ravindra Yavagal is famous for his fingering techniques in tabla. R.Dileep on the mridangam has performed in Mysore Dasara. The Ghatam artist Vidwan Trichy K.R.Kumar is famous for his concerts aired by A.I.R. Mangalore.

Up,Up.......and higher
Huge tidal waves measuring 5.5 metres high hit the Mumbai coastline from the Gateway of India to Juhu on Friday afternoon.
The phenomenon generated tremendous curiousity and enthusiasm among the people who thronged the city's famous beaches and coastlines like the Marine Drive andthe Worli sea face to witness the nature's fury.
The Friday tides were billed as the highest in hundred years. Scientifically, the event was attributed to a combination of monsoon and the strong gravitational pull of theMoon two days after the New Moon.

Wine festival in Bangalore
A unique festival indeed! By the time the second day of the festival closed around sun set, no less than 300 cases had been sold-a measure of the taste of Bangloreans.
What, however, left a bad taste in the mouth of those who dropped by at the festival was that thay were not offered to taste any of the wines.
Those with deep pockets purchased wine in bulk to fill up their cellars and the modest buyer left with a bottle tugged under his arm.
The organisers were surprised by the response they recieved to the festival. Altogether they sold more than300 cases in two days and are expecting more footfalls on Sunday the festival's last day.

Nature gives way for concretisation
In two years(2007-2009) Bangalore has lost 972 trees to make way for wider roads.
Chief Minister B.S.Yeddyurappa revealed this in the council on Thursday. During 2007-2008, 675 trees were felled for road widening, while in 2008-09 297 trees were chopped off.
These include trees on Sarjapur Road (144 trees), Hosur road(96), Palace Road(103) and Seshadri road (153) which bore the maximum brunt.
The CM said BBMP is carrying out compensative afforestation in vacant spaces. About 92,575 seedlings had been planted during 2007-08 and 1.10 lakh during 2008-09 on the road-side and vacant spaces.

Rocket planes in use
If things go as per schedule, within a decade, space travellers could island hop from Hawaii to Japan in just 45 minutes.
If the plan goes forward, tourists would pay $200,000 for a weeklong package including spaceflight training, resort accomodations and short test flights to simulate weightlessness. At the vacations finale, five voyagers would embark on a horizontal take-off aboard a special rocket plane, climb to 40,000 ft before rockets fire, accelerate to 3,500 mph.coast for a few minutes of weightlessness 62 miles above the Earth, flip over and then return to ground.
Hawaii could become the eighth state granted a spaceport license. The process will take about three years, meaning space flights wouldn't start before 2012.

Politicians and their promises
'One billion poor people on this planet in totality' so it was reported in the press recently. Who are the people responsible for 'wiping every tear from every eye'. It is the politicians' tribe of course. From Jawaharlal Nehru to Sonia Gandhi and his French counterpartNicholas Sarkozy to budding rulers like Rajesh Pilot and Supriya Sule these maverick lot have ridden on the common man's hope and faith.
Once they come to power it's another story. Slums are galore in Mumbai, infant mortality is high in our country. Cases of swine flu, chickengunya,AIDs are reported in the papers daily. Running water, sanitation, education for the girl child, playgrounds in schools and three meals affordable for a poor family are promises which the ruler makes. But poverty abounds. This is apparent to all of us. Money-laundering is the only pursuit the politician can be accused of? What is to be done?
Meanwhile population goes on increasing and the poor wiilt leading a sub-standard life. The beggar, the cripple, the unemployed has no one who will take notice of him and rid him of his misery.

Around the world in13 months
Zac Sunderland,a 17-year-old American, has become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, completing a 45,000-km trip that began last year. His family, friends and hundreds of onlookers cheered as his 36-foot intrepid boat entered the harbour in Marina Del Ray. Also on hand was a team from the American Sailing Association, which certified his accomplishment.
The shaggy-haired sailor later gave a whoop of joy before addressing the crowd.
Sunderland was 16 when he left the coastal community west of Los Angeles on June 14 2008- a voyage that included encounters with pirates and wild storms. His father, shipwright Laurence Sunderland, met him at various stops and helped him repair damages to the boat.
The teenager Sunderland mainly ate freeze-dried and canned foods with one of his sponsors providing fresh vegetables.
According to the adventurer his toughest challenge was the sleep deprivation when he needed to guide it through the night.

Age catches up with Sunny
The man who gave Indian cricket the hope, belief and confidence that it was in no way inferior to the rest of the world turns 60 on Friday.
Technician non-pareil and run-accumulator supreme, Sunil Gavaskar was the abiding face of Indian cricket for 16 years, between 1971 and 1987, steering the ship with a steady hand and an uncluttered mind.
He had a devotion to his craft that was awe-inspiring. Against the best quicks of his time and with no protective headgear.
When he called it a day in 1987, he finished with10,122 runs and 34 hundreds, then world records. Both have since been surpassed, but the aura surrounding the original Little Master hasn't diminished one bit.

New purchases for IAF
The government plans to buy 230 Su-30 MKI fighters for the Indian Air Force by 2015.
The long-range striker had an unblemished safety record till April 30 when the first Su-30 MKI crashed near Jaisalmer.
However, the IAF still plans to use Su-30 MKI as one of its mainstay aircraft.
In 1996, India signed a $1.46 billion contract with Russia to buy 40 Su-30s and a technology transfer agreement for licensed production of 140 fighters at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited facility in Nasik. Later the first generation Su-30s were upgraded to Su-30 MKI.

Eye-catching waterfall
The Mallali waterfall presents a once in a life-time experience. Surging with force, the fall gushes through its way forming a mist-like surrounding around it, literally making it invisible.
This fall can be counted among some of the beautiful waterfalls of kodagu. It is said that Kumaradhara river which takes birth at Pushpagiri, falls as this beautiful waterfall at Mallalli and flows towards Subramanya.
To find the waterfall, one may have to travel towards Pushpagiri hill from Somwarpet on Kondalli road.
After viewing the fall one can see ancient Mallikurnaswamy temple. Somwarpete is about 20 kms from the waterfall.
There arre very few buses plying here. Hence visitors have to hire a jeep from Somwarpete, which may cost aboutRs.700.
The best time to visit Mallali fall is somewhere during the end of rainy season to ward off oneself from leeches.

Ice Age 3:Dawn of the Dinosaurs
There is Scrat, the squirrel continously trying to balance his love for acorn and a beautiful Scratte.
Inside the world of dinosaurs Diego and Manny meet one interesting one-eyed weasel Buck, who agreed to help them rescue Sid.
One amazing thing about Ice Age 3 is that the nature of the characters are left untouched. One can still relate to each of the characters. The introduction of Buck also adds thrill to the gang's adventure.
The voice of Buck, grumpy and straight, by Simon Rego stands out from rest of the cast.
Director Carlos Saldanha is also brilliant in stitching together the sub -plots involving friendship, family and brotherhood.
However the soun d effects failed to keep up with the fine graphic.
On the whole, Ice Age3 is no longer very cool, but just cool with a few laugh spots here and there.

Excelling in Art
Perfection comes in small 'pockets'. This could well describe Riya Ashok. She, an Indo-American kid settled in the U.S. strode on a lucky lane as she won the 'Frisco Transportation Award-then and now' at school.
The award did make her happy, she confesses. Inheriting her mother's taste in 'dressing-up' she took to fashion- designing in the 2nd grade of school.
Her patterns are mostlyy modern. She designs her own clothes for functions, partiesetc.
Her activities do not end there. Playing the piano, shopping and reading are her other hobbies.
She enjoys her occupation at Art class.
She has a lot of friends in school. She doesn't have a mentor but is encouraged in her pastimes by her parents.
In future, she plans to go to Paris to further her ambitions to become a fashion designer.

Engineer's brainwave
Two engineering graduates in their 20s have developed a self-illuminating system which functions on intensity of ambient light, which promises to conserve power and savings to the tune of lakhs of ruupees.
The concept is similar to the self-timer, that is installed at switching points, that automatically switches on or off streetlights at a predetermined time. But the new device of the entrepreneurs is more advanced and efficient and senses the intensity of available light to decide whether it should shut down or not.
The device was jointly developed by K.Naveen and Prashanth Iyer, both of who completed Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Engineering(NIE) in 2002, and have since worked on different concepts including the Electro-Magnetic Braking System which has been patented.
The device is called 'Swayam Prabhe'(self-illumination) and it works on photo sensors on models which ccan be installed in plains where fog and mist is not an issue.
